<image:title>Initiatives/Assessment Report - Restoration and Long-Term Maintenance.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Restoration Group broke ground on the site on Monday 17th February 2021 and the rebuilding of the sign will begin when level 5 restrictions are lifted. On Monday the first signs of the letters were exposed. It is 78 since their foundation. Origional stone and added local stone will be used. In uncovering the sign, vegetation around it has now been strimmed, and will be “kept to a minimum” All the restoration work will be in collaboration and “under the supervision of a plant ecologist”. *We have one of Howth’s leading and most respected ecologist on board to oversee the complete restoration. The letters are fully cleared and in maintaining the sign “vegetation between the letters … [should be] strimmed to c.5-10cm annually/biannually depending on levels of regrowth”, and any regrowth within the letters themselves “either trimmed manually with a secateurs or treated with vinegar.” While the Restoration Group initially sought a restoration encompassing the “box” of the sign and its triangular enclosure, it welcomes the Faith Wilson Report as a viable compromise solution and supports it in full.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - CAMPAIGN TO RESTORE THE HOWTH “ÉIRE 6” SIGN</image:title>
<image:caption>Only about twenty-three of these wartime EIRE signs are believed to have survived. Some have been, or are being, restored. One of these is the EIRE 7 sign at Dalkey, forming with Howth the two that marked out Dublin Bay. It was restored by Dalkey Tidy Towns volunteers. In September 2019 a committed local group formed the Howth EIRE 6 Restoration Group. With strong community support, the group began working with Fingal County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to restore the Howth Eire 6 sign. On February 4th 2021 Ministerial permission from the NPWS was granted. The initial work to clear the letters began on Monday February 16th. All letters and the number 6 were clearly and easily identified. The restoration was complete in April 2022.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - LOCATION AND STRUCTURE OF THE HOWTH “EIRE 6” SIGN</image:title>
<image:caption>The Look Out Post (LOP) of the Coast Watching Service in Howth, now demolished, had a field of vision south across Dublin Bay to other LOPs at Dalkey and Bray, and north to the next LOP at Clogher Head. Its coordinates were 53.371099,-6.054931. The “EIRE 6” sign, 0.7 km due northeast of the site of this LOP, on Howth’s East Mountain, when restored will be visible from the main flight path into Dublin. It is located at coordinates 53.3748125,- 6.0496875.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Originally</image:title>
<image:caption>The “ÉIRE 6” sign was positioned within a triangular outer frame, formed by three paths, one, the east side, the present ‘Upper Cliff Path’ (at the bottom in the drawing below), another leading north-west, towards what is now a spruce plantation (at the apex of the triangle below) and a third, now buried on the northern side (at right in the drawing), which crossed an old track to a field of potato drills still visible in the landscape. This triangular framing of “ÉIRE 6” is unique, not seen elsewhere, encompassing an area of c. 2,670 m2 (0.27 Ha).</image:caption>

<image:title>History - HISTORIC IMPORTANCE OF THE “EIRE 6” SIGN</image:title>
<image:caption>In August 1939, as war in Europe approached, the Irish Government introduced emergency measures to assert and defend Irish neutrality in the looming conflict. These measures included establishing a voluntary, noncombatant Coast Watching Service (CWS) to observe and record shipping and aircraft along Ireland’s long coastline. Eighty-three Look-Out Posts (LOPs) were quickly erected on strategic headlands, the majority along the Atlantic seaboard and a lesser number on the east coast. Each was connected directly to military headquarters by phone and manned around the clock by a team of CWS Volunteers commanded by a corporal</image:caption>

<image:title>History - Men of the Mountain</image:title>
<image:caption>The CWS volunteers who manned the Howth LOP throughout 1939-45 and installed the EIRE-6 sign in summer 1943 were mostly local men, many of whose relatives still live in the area and some of whom are active in our campaign. They were Seán Rorke, Roger Austin, John Gallagher, Thomas MacLoughlin, Tom McNally, Andy Moore, Paddy Moore, John Redmond and Tom Redmond. Rorke, popularly known as “Darky Rorke”, was the corporal in command. A much respected local community leader, he was a veteran of the Howth IRA in the War of Independence and a champion Dublin GAA footballer. He worked his farm on the East Mountain, very near the site of the “ÉIRE 6” sign. On the outbreak of war he volunteered to join in the defence of Ireland’s neutrality and was appointed to command Howth LOP.</image:caption>

<image:title>History</image:title>
<image:caption>The Howth LOP was of the standard design, a small prefabricated concrete building – an advanced technique for the time - within a circular or square platform, with viewing windows to three sides and a phone link to military headquarters. It was located on what is now the grass area beside the Summit carpark, near the water tower. Unfortunately, the Howth LOP hut was demolished about ten years ago. The “EIRE 6” sign located about 700m northeast of the site of the LOP has, however, survived.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Howth EIRE 6 Restoration Group is a collaboration between people from local community organisations who restored the “EIRE 6” sign on Howth’s East Mountain, a large Second World War aerial recognition marker. The letters of the sign are about 12m in height formed of 1.5m-wide strips of embedded whitewashed locally-sourced stone (similar to the example at Malin Head in Donegal on the right). The sign was intended to be visible to encroaching aircraft of the combatant powers. It is a surviving monument of that war and as such part both of our national heritage and local history.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The sign was build in the summer of 1943. Lost to overgrowth & partially revealed in a fire in 1981. The sign fully restored and officially opened by President Higgins on the 9th April 2022. By involving youth groups, schools, clubs & local families in its restoration, we aim to promote a growing awareness among the local community of its historic significance and commemorate the local volunteers of the Coast Watching Service (CWS) who manned the nearby Look-Out Post from 1939 to 1945 and installed the “EIRE 6” sign in 1943. Through their role in guarding the coastline these men played an integral part in defending Irish neutrality during World War Two.
